Bio
John Scheurich is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt known for his technical precision, deep love of drilling, and expertise in preparing students for competition. With over a decade of experience, John is dedicated to helping athletes sharpen their skills, refine their strategies, and develop the confidence needed to succeed on the mats.
John began his Jiu-Jitsu journey in 2010 under Jim Fortunato before moving to Rick Macauley’s gym in 2012. When Rick closed his academy, John joined SAS Team in 2013 under Professor Daniel Tavares, where he has remained ever since.
A passionate competitor, John made the bold decision to sell everything he owned and move to Brazil in 2015 to train at SAS Team HQ in Fortaleza. While in Brazil, he proved himself on the competition scene, winning:
• City and state championships at blue and purple belt (Gi, No-Gi, and Absolute)
• 2nd place at the Brazilian National Championship (CBLP) at blue belt
• 1st place at the Pan American CBLP at purple belt Absolute Gi
Since returning to the U.S. in 2017, John has continued to dominate on the mats, securing victories in NAGA, Newbreed, and other prestigious tournaments at brown belt, as well as earning:
• 2nd place in Gi and 3rd place in No-Gi at the 2025 Brazilian National Championship
John’s coaching philosophy is built on technical excellence, structured drilling, and competition readiness. He believes that consistent, intelligent training is the key to success, and he pushes his students to reach their full potential through precision, repetition, and strategic preparation. Whether working with new students or seasoned competitors, John’s attention to detail and passion for the sport make him an invaluable instructor for those looking to take their Jiu-Jitsu to the next level.
